Transcend revisits my very first typeface, Carrig – to be precise, the all-caps “Refined” version. I first drew Carrig in 1998, and it had nagged away at me for 16 years before redrawing and releasing it at the end of 2014. Since then I have had a similar nagging feeling to look at the letterforms once more and try to create the perfect classical titling typeface – a sort of “Carrig Refined Refined”, if you like!
So far, I am pleased with the result. It certainly evokes the premium quality feel I was hoping to achieve. I have added swashes, flourishes and ligatures that have been carefully considered to help accentuate and embellish each word that you type. I have seen many typefaces of varying quality during my research that seem to force swashes onto characters that simply do not require them. I looked more to classics such as Trajan and Perpetua for inspiration, neither of which are overly embellished. They simply exude class and quality – which Transcend also hopefully epitomises.
